Tuning is the process of equalizing tension on the approximately 235 strings of the piano so that they sound with the pitches of the musical scale.
As a wooden instrument, pianos are sensitive to changes in humidity. Most manufacturers recommend that the piano be tuned once or twice a year at a minimum; more frequently if new, as the strings need to stretch and settle. A good rule is to have your piano tuned around the time you turn your heat on in the fall, and again when you turn it off in the spring.
I was trained to tune completely aurally. I now choose to combine my aural skills with those of a sophisticated electronic tuning device to achieve the most consistent and accurate possible results every time I tune a piano.
Pitch Adjustment:
Before a fine tuning can be accomplished it is sometimes necessary to complete a pitch adjustment in order to get the piano to A440 (also known as "concert pitch"). |
